Why Does The Insanity Workout Work? Answer: Interval Training

Insanity pushes you beyond what you thought was possible with explosive cardio and plyometric drills and non-stop intervals of strength, power and resistance. Additional ab and core training techniques will get you amazing results in just 60 days.

Interval training allows you to beat the “stress adaptation response,” which is what happens when your body gets used to exercising at one level of exertion and stops improving. An interval workout includes a set where you perform at your maximum, followed by one of lower intensity, with the cycle repeated to achieve a cumulative effect.

INSANITY uses MAX Interval Training which replaces your moderate-intensity exercise with maximum-intensity exercise, and your short intervals of intensity with short periods of rest. Adding high-intensity exercise, during which your heart rate is raised to 80 percent or more of its maximum capacity, forces your body to use fast-twitch muscle fibers not normally engaged in cardio exercise. These fast-twitch fibers continue burning extra fuel even during lower-intensity exercise.

INSANITY’s high-intensity activity is likely to have you working out at over 85% of your maximum, instead of the lower rate recommended in other programs. As a result, you’ll experience faster increases in fitness and more efficient burning of carbohydrates and fat—as much as 1,000 calories per hour.

2010-08-06 Karen .... I ordered the Insanity DVD for my daughter but I tried it as well. I'm in my early fifties and quite fit, but found it was too intensive for me--the jumping has bothered my knees,I had mild knee discomfort before I tried it. My daughter, however, loves it! She has stuck to the time table and has finished her first month and notices a difference in her body and stamina already. It's a vigorous workout--to keep up you need to be in good physical shape to begin with or just do as much as you can and work up to keeping up.
2010-08-04 Jeremy .... This workout will straight up kick ur butt! I'm on week three, and my cardio fitness has exploded. Shaun T is motivating and no where near as annoying as most fitness program hosts. Just one warning, this is not a program for beginners. You have to be in some form of fitness prior to starting. I would suggest this program to anyone that works out regularly and wants that at home program that will get you shredded
2010-08-03 Elizabeth .... This workout is pushing me to the limits. I am now 2 weeks into it and am starting to see core muscles that I didn't know I had. That being said, I'm a 48 year old woman and, if I didn't already workout regularly, I wouldn't be able to do "Insanity." Right now, I'm only getting through about 60-70% of the entire main workout without taking extra water breaks. The workout takes your heart rate to the 85% limit for long stretches of time. Don't try this workout without being in reasonable decent physical condition first. This is not a "I wanna lose weight and haven't worked out in a while..." type workout. I'm using it to get over a plateau that a reached while running and lifting weights. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish the whole 60 days. The only reason I'm rating it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I can't rate the whole workout yet.
2010-07-20 Murrey .... This product is as advertised. I am entering week 3 and would like to share some observations about the program. First, it is not, by any means, an easy workout. It is 40 min that will test your will to succeed. In the first week my heart rate neared 190BPM, and burned a minimum of 800 calories, sometimes breaking 1100. Just for reference, I am 6'2" about 250 and in fairly good shape. Just before starting the program I was doing a 40 min weight session, and 30 - 40 min of running five days a week. Secondly, it can be a bit rough on the joints. There is a significant amount of high impact, so if you have had joint issues, be sure to wear your brace. Finally, it works. It works very well. In the first 2 weeks I have cut about 9 pounds, 3.5% body fat, and gained 2% muscle. It is amazing to me how well it works.

In short, if you really want to lean up, are very determined, and have 45min a day to spare, this is the best option I have found.I will follow up at the end of the program, and see if the results continue.
2010-07-14 oliver .... I have been doing insanity for 6 weeks. I still unfortunately drink NOS energy soda like every day. But I have lost an estimated 7-10 lbs. I am not weighing my self during becuase I want to wait until im done.

I am going to tell you the truth that I love to hate this workout after do my second week. It is the best workout I have ever had and going into my second week is an acomplishment.It is the best workout there I am not lying,not spam or some advertisment this is the hardest workout on dvds.

2010-06-20 jones .... Shaun T just as a good motivator and instructor. You need to follow the routine right away to form a decent shape, but if not just push yourself as far as you can until you build yourself up. In my opinion Shaun T is very good in keeping your spirits up.
2010-06-19 Jensen .... The results were great! I ran my same regular route at about the same pace, but the noticeable difference was where my heart rate was. For the entire run it was a good 5-10 bpm lower than it used to be. My neighborhood is quite hilly and even hitting the big hills didn’t elevate my heart rate nearly as much as it used to. So this tells me my cardiovascular system is in much better shape than before Insanity! I could definitely have run much longer or faster if I desired

I have learned what 'real' exercise is and now realize that if you want results of any kind (losing weight, gaining muscle, sculpting your body) it takes persistance, dedication and hard work. Nothing comes easy when your goals are high.
